Bank Levies

The IRS (and the state departments of revenue) have vast powers of collection and probably their most visible weapon to collect money is a bank levy or wage (including SSI) garnishment. Both of these are “enforced collection action(s)” where in money is taken out of your bank account or paycheck and turned over to the IRS. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including if you do file your taxes, do not pay your taxes, or fail to make arrangements to settle your past due tax debt.

The government usually levies only when the following conditions have occurred:

  • The government assessed the tax ;

  • You were sent a Final Notice for the debt ;

  • You failed to respond or meet the conditions of the Final Notice .

If a levy is placed on your bank account or your wages have been garnished, its important to understand that you have options and fighting this is regularly successful EVEN IF YOU OWE THE DEBT. If you’ve been subject to a bank levy (now or in the past) or are having your wage garnished (or SSI levied), contact us at (888)266-0962 or click here to schedule an appointment. You have options and we can discuss them with you.
