Moving Expenses

Did you relocate this year because of a job change?  What about if the business relocated?  If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be able to deduct your moving expenses (but not the meals)... here are few tests before you can even looking at the deductions:

  1. The move must be closely related to the start of work.  Generally speaking, you can consider moving expenses if they occur within one year of the date you start work at the new job location.
  2. Your move must meet the distance test.  Your new main job location must be 50 miles farther (at least) from your old home than your previous job location.
  3. You must meet the time test.  After the move, you must work full-time at your new job for at least 39 weeks in the first year (self-employed is 78 weeks over 2 years).
